Where We’ve Been
A brief history of where we have been.
On March 15, 1954 are group of Baptist Churches and the department of the Baptist Convention got together to discuss the “Wilson” area of the Salisbury Road. Their conversation was about something that we still believe in today. First, we want to see our neighborhood get to know Jesus and develop a relationship with him. Second, we want to make sure kids in the area have a safe place to achieve the first goal.
After a survey of the area Uplands Baptist Church held their first gathering in the auditorium of the Uplands School on March 28th, 2 weeks later!
The first pastor was called later that year, November 7, 1954, Rev. E. R. MacWilliam. He led 43 families in the beginning known as Salisbury Road United Baptist Church. There have since been many pastors serving for the exact same mission as stated earlier and we still have that heart. We want to see people meet with Jesus and have a relationship with Him.
Our current building was completed in 1956 and expanded again in 1965. This was due to growth and a need of more space to minister to our community. This shows the hunger people had for the Gospel and what can be accomplished by a faithful few. Our desire today is to model the passion that our first members had back then.
In 1969 the Salisbury Road United Baptist Church became Uplands United Baptist Church.
Since its beginning Uplands Baptist Church has ministered to the area they gather in in many different ways. In a short matter of time we have seen growth, pain, happiness, and everything in between. No matter what we have done the mission has always been the same, “To bring Jesus to our neighbourhood and create a safe space to worship and learn more about Him.”
One can look at the history and ministry of Uplands Baptist Church and see God at work. He has just begun and Uplands is going to continue to pursue that mission.
